Why CPU Usage Is So High ZS Audio synths are not designed like modern efficiency-optimized virtual instruments. Internally, they perform combinations of: Continuous heterodyne mathematics Repeated folding and absolute-value operations Large numbers of interacting oscillators Per-cycle randomization Spectral resynthesis involving tens to hundreds of internal oscillators Cross-modulation and feedback networks Phase-coherent processing across infrasonic, audible, and ultrasonic domains These operations are: Non-linear Deeply interdependent Difficult or impossible to vectorize efficiently Not simplified, approximated, or “optimized away” As a result, CPU usage scales non-linearly with complexity. More structure does not cost “a little more CPU” — it can cost exponentially more.
     You are expected to:

  • Build sound deliberately
  • Commit results to audio

  3. Dial in relationships and structures
  4. Accept glitches, dropouts, or instability during preview
  5. Render or bounce the output offline

Live playback stability is not a design priority.Sound quality, spectral integrity, and mathematical correctness are.
Hardware RealityAt present, no modern computer — consumer or professional — can run synthesizers of this architectural complexity at full resolution, in real time, without CPU disruption.
This is not a flaw in optimization.
It is a limitation of current hardware.
