ZS_DRSYN_X_
1. Core Concept
This instrument is not a traditional oscillator → filter → amp synth.
Its core function is to construct audible sound by mathematically folding and heterodyning infrasound and ultrasound around a 1 Hz reference, then collapsing that energy into the audible band through controlled non-linear interactions.
Instead of “generating notes,” it creates interference structures that become notes.
2. Engine Architecture (8 Engines)
The synth contains 8 fully independent engines, each one being a complete signal-generation system.
Each engine consists of:
A. 1 Hz Carrier (Foundation)
- Every engine starts from a 1 Hz carrier
- This carrier is phase-accurate and continuous
- All higher frequencies are derived as ratios, folds, or heterodynes of this base
This guarantees:
- Perfect long-term phase coherence
- Predictable beat structures
- Stable sub-audible modulation behavior
B. Infrasound Bank (8 Oscillators)
- Frequencies below 20 Hz
- Used not as audible sound, but as structural modulators
- These drive:
- Phase bending
- Time-domain folding
- Envelope distortion
- Sub-harmonic beating
Infrasound never “plays” — it shapes.
C. Ultrasonic Bank (8 Oscillators)
- Frequencies far above Nyquist
- Intentionally aliased by design
- When folded back into the audible domain they generate:
- Metallic sidebands
- Dense harmonic clusters
- Inharmonic spectral smear
Ultrasound acts as spectral fuel.
3. Heterodyne Beating & Folding
The audible output is produced through heterodyne math:
f_out = |f1 − f2|
Where:
- f1 may be infrasonic or ultrasonic
- f2 may be audible or sub-audible
This causes:
- Beat frequencies to appear in the audible range
- Pitch to emerge from difference tones
- Motion without traditional LFOs
Folding Stages
Signals are repeatedly:
- Reflected
- Wrapped
- Absolute-valued
- Clipped symmetrically
This produces:
- Nonlinear harmonic generation
- Fractal-like spectral repetition
- Perceptual “pressure” rather than loudness
4. Color Box (96 Harmonic System)
Each engine includes a Color Box containing 96 harmonic paths.
These harmonics include:
- Standard harmonic ratios
- Subharmonics
- Negative harmonics (phase-inverted ratios)
- Extended regions labeled infrared (below fundamental) and ultraviolet (above harmonic series)
Polarity Modes
Each harmonic can be:
- Positive
- Negative (inverted phase)
- Offset asymmetrically
This allows constructive and destructive interference instead of filtering.
5. LFO System with Peak-Width FM
The LFO is not a simple periodic modulator.
It uses:
- Peak-width modulation instead of duty cycle
- FM applied to the shape itself, not the output
- Variable curvature rather than linear ramps
Mathematically:
- LFO = function(time, curvature, phase skew)
- FM affects zero crossings, not amplitude
This prevents:
- Static motion
- Predictable looping artifacts
6. Math Engine (diff / abs / sum / random)
The synth continuously recombines signals using:
- Difference (heterodyne)
- Absolute value (folding)
- Summation (energy accumulation)
- Randomized coefficient perturbation
These operations are:
- Sample-accurate
- Often recalculated per block
- CPU-heavy by design
Random terms are:
- Bounded
- Correlated (not white noise)
- Used to avoid limit cycles and tonal freezing
7. Random Cycle Detune
Unlike traditional detune:
- Each oscillator’s cycle length is slightly randomized
- Randomization happens per cycle, not per note
- Drift is micro-temporal, not pitch-based
Result:
- No chorusing
- No beating in the classic sense
- Living, unstable spectra that never lock
8. Modulation Matrix
The matrix is bipolar and bidirectional.
Key traits:
- Sources and destinations can modulate each other
- Modulation depth can exceed unity
- Negative modulation inverts causality
This allows:
- Feedback modulation paths
- Cross-engine spectral mutation
- Chaos-adjacent behavior without instability
9. Global FX System
Global FX are post-engine but pre-normalization.
They are:
- True multi-input / multi-output
- Designed to preserve phase relationships
- Intended to enhance density, not coloration
They operate on energy structures, not “sound.”
10. Resynthesis System (270 → 1 Oscillator)
The resynthesis engine:
- Analyzes spectral energy
- Reconstructs it using up to 270 internal oscillators
- Then collapses them into a single coherent oscillator
This produces:
- Massive harmonic density
- Phase-locked reconstruction
- Extreme efficiency after collapse
It is spectral compression, not additive synthesis.
11. Smart Gain Normalization
Smart Gain is not a limiter.
It:
- Measures RMS and spectral density
- Accounts for folded ultrasonic energy
- Normalizes perceived loudness, not peak level
It ensures:
- Consistent output regardless of complexity
- No pumping
- No transient destruction
12. Summary (What This Synth Actually Is)
This synth is:
- A frequency-interference generator
- A heterodyne-based spectral constructor
- A folding engine using infra and ultra sound
- A nonlinear resynthesis instrument
- A controlled chaos system with phase integrity
It does not:
- Rely on filters
- Use traditional subtractive flow
- Generate sound in a linear manner
It creates sound by forcing frequencies to collide until structure emerges.
13. Multi-Channel High-Pass / Low-Pass System (8 Channels, 15 Routing Modes)
In addition to its folding and heterodyne architecture, the synth contains 8 dedicated filter channels, each capable of operating as high-pass or low-pass.
These are not conventional tone-shaping filters. They function as structural separators and routing gates inside the interference network.
Channel Structure
- 8 independent HP/LP channels
- Each channel can be:
- High-pass
- Low-pass
- Dynamically switched or modulated
- Filters operate per engine or across engines, depending on routing mode
